Group 3 on Generosity

Are we being generous to ourselves? That's the question we asked ourselves when we started our discussions as a group. We think being generous to ourselves can also be a form of being generous. In order to take care of others and be generous to others we have to take care of ourselves first by being generous to ourselves sometimes. We wonder when self generosity becomes selfish. We all took parallel trains of thoughts but we did agree on one fact, generosity does not necessarily mean a sacrifice. Living in a capitalist world, we took the first train to the direction of generosity in the field of consumerism. Today consumerism and charity are often combined.

Shuhrath Jamil — Subtle

The days I was away from him, I was away from myself.
I chose to ignore my soul simply because I could not have the analgesia He demanded of me.
Perhaps I begin to abandon myself as body leaving the soul!
Sewing through one's lips is an absolute art, I agree.
Yet how do you explain this attachment where I could not just move beyond him?
Endangered, wounded as California Condor.
Orphan I became.

Marie in ’t Veld — Generosity

Generosity for me, is being kind to not only others, but yourself and nature. A willingness to give help or support on not only fysical but also on emotional aspect. I like being in nature and to be surrounded by the greens and by animals. It zens me out and I loved to get inspired by it.

Nature starts with a generous act, and it requires a generous response. Nature (life on earth) runs on sunlight, a free and ever present energy resource. When I think about generosity, i’m not thinking about being generous to an other human being but about
nature being generous towards us, humans. I’m thinking about animals who are generous for the whole environment. Insects that provide pollination, animals and plants that provide us and others with goods like milk, wool, eggs, etc.

I would love to make some paintings which to my mind represent ‘generosity’, the base I’m working on, is a body-bag, that in my perspective, because of the fully biodegradable, sustainable material, a generous act on his own is for nature. Giving back to the earth by using recycled materials as a/our final resting place. (A bodybag is not as good for nature like a mycelia bag but it’s not as bad as throwing away some plastics as example).

Halil Cuma — When It’s Enough?

“When you believe there is enough you start seeing opportunities for generosity everywhere”.
The good picture of the world where the creation is an expression of God’s generous love. He’s the host and humans are his guests in a world full of opportunities and abundance.
Look at the picture where birds don’t store food for themselves as they have enough. Flowers growing up and they don’t stress about their existence.

Tuchila Jamees

The meaning of generosity depends on the context. More specifically, it depends on religion, scale, material or immaterial, individual or group, culture, society. Generosity consists of layers, and functions like a game of dominoes that affect each other when the first one is set in motion. The discussion started with the questions ‘Can you be generous toward yourself?’ ‘What would that look like?’ and ‘At what point does generosity toward oneself become selfishness?’. Alex emphasized the blurred line between these two. Some people consider generosity as something that stands in direct contact with sacrifice of own needs or happiness. We agreed that generosity toward yourself and your mental wellbeing can influence how you treat others.

Vera Looij

I made seven drawings/sketches using crayon depicting different types of generosity, which are all still a work in progress. For the second session I am not sure yet whether I want to continue with my collection of drawings or if I want to combine different aspects of my drawings into one big new work. I would love to hear some interpretations of my work and what symbolism you are able to recognize in my drawings. Technical advice and other suggestions are also very welcome.

Feedback Transdisciplinary Team

The work of Group 3 stands out because of its multiplicity of forms of expression, partly because each person has traveled his own individual path and decided to make his own contribution from a highly personal perspective. In that individual expression, a wide range of themes emerged: art, sciences, technology, religion, society and nature. Almost all of the contributions in the group touched on elements such as nature, vulnerability, health, well-being and connection. As part of the Chapter Generosity transdisciplinary team, artist Koen Vanmechelen selected Freeze as the artwork to integrate the ideations of group 3 with the feedback and reflections of the transdisciplinary team.
