Mirrors of Time

Kasteel Oud-Rekem (BE)
24 July - 27 September 2020

Everything in life reflects time. This is also the case for Oud-Rekem, which has since been given new life with many quirky exhibitions. It is there where Annemie Van Laethem & Erik Croux found the place thirty years ago to give their inspiration for contemporary art a face. The castle serves as a mirror of recent developments in the world of contemporary art.

Mirrors of Time reflects how the love of art was embodied in many ways here. With as focus a tireless dedication and passion for contemporary visual art, for the empathy and interpretation of often not always young, sometimes unknown, but also internationally active visual artists. Many found ways from here to a large audience.

Mirrors of Time revolves around the insight that art is always about time and can be seen as a reflection of the thinking and works of artists. Visitors can board at any level imaginable, but always in amazement and wonder.

Especially in our time, which demands new and well-known reflections, practices and wisdom, art as a mirroring source of hope and inspiration is indispensable.

Between Jungle and Civilization

The installation consists out of several works of art that span over three floors. The theme is reincarnation, the circular and never-ending process of birth, evolution and rebirth.

VAN EYCK IS ALSO HERE...

In the exhibition Mirrors of Time, in addition to a color reproduction 1/1 of The Ghent Altarpiece (or the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, Dutch: Het Lam Gods), all infrared and X-ray images will be shown in full size.

The Ghent Altarpiece, the ultimate story, as a starting point for reflection on 30 years of contemporary art.

The Ghent Altarpiece was completed in 1432 by the VAN EYCK brothers. In the almost 600 years that it has existed, the world has changed quite a bit. However, the work still speaks volumes. Material-technical research on the paintings on the one hand brings the makers from the Middle Ages closer, on the other it reflects the differences between the present and the past and places the viewer in his own time. The very special layer construction applied by the Van Eyck brothers, their materials and painting technique, were further investigated during the last restoration campaign. Using technical photos helps to better understand the creative process. For the visitors it is an experience that can contribute to looking at the painting differently, with more technical insight.

The painting as a source of information: an exceptional experience!
