Mechelse Aseel (CCP28)

ASEEL CHICKEN

ASEEL

Bangladesh

The Aseelor Asil is an ancient pure breed from India with a distinct appearance.  Meaning "pure" in Arabic and "high-born, pure," in Hindi, its name reflects the great respect for this breed in India. The Aseel breed has a rich history in India, with references dating back to 1000 BC in the Institutes of Menu. Aseels come in Black Breasted Red (Wheaten), Dark, Spangled, and White varieties. Aseels are upright, aggressive, and bold. They are designed for cockfighting. They are known for their intelligence and pugnacious nature. These chickens are vigorous, tenacious survivors suitable for ranging but are considered poor to decent egg producers. Aseels have been crossbred to produce meaty carcasses and are considered the original source of genes for today's commercial broilers. Due to their aggression towards other chickens, Aseels require experienced owners but can bond well with humans. They are heat-tolerant and resistant to common backyard flock diseases.

The crossbreeding of the Mechelse Baladi (CCP26) with the Icelandic Haughænsni resulted in the birth of the Mechelse Haughænsni (CCP27). While the Mechelse Baladi showed surprisingly little diversity, the Icelandic chicken added genetic purity, stunning feather variations, prolific egg production, adaptability to various climates, impressive foraging skills, and a strong, brooding instinct. Hence the creation of the genetically enriched Mechelse Haughænsni. The qualities of the Haughænsni make it highly sought after by individuals interested in sustainable and self-sufficient chicken farming. Whether for their beauty, productivity, or ability to thrive in challenging conditions, the Icelandic chicken stands out as a remarkable and captivating breed. And so is the Mechelse Haughænsni.

Expedition

Koen Vanmechelen found the Aseel in Bangladesh in communities where they were breeding the bird. It happened during an expedition to Bandarban, in south-eastern Bangladesh, where Koen asked the monks in the Buddhist Golden Temple to write the book of the White-Eared Pheasant together. The visit led to plans for the community project Dream of Human Nature. The exhibition revolves around how humans should live, how we can transcend ourselves, and our dream about our human nature. The Mechelse Aseel (CCP28) will be the central point of the show at Brihatta art foundation.
